Congratulations!
Baby’s heart-rate
OK Ladies let’s talk about what you may hear or see when you visit Pregnancy Treasures Boutique for our Guppy Beat Ultrasound starting at 6 weeks into pregnancy.Remember ladies this is informational purposes only and you must always chat with your medical team for specifics relating to you and your baby. This info is a general guideline and in no way is it to replace you speaking with your doc. Got it. great, now let’s chat about the awesome sound of your baby’s heart-beat.
Positive “pee-stick”
You are so excited your “Pee – stick” test is POSITIVE. You look on your app and it says you are about 3 to 4 weeks pregnant. You wait until you think you are 6 weeks and you call Pregnancy Treasures so we can let you hear that awesome heartbeat via our ultrasound.
We know typically your baby’s heart-beat/rate is first visible on sonography around 6 weeks of gestation and we know you can’t wait to see and hear the awesome growth occurring inside your body. Now let’s back-up just a minute. Remember from our BLOG on What’s Happening Inside we know that the first two weeks are not really clear, and that is because technically you are not considered pregnant yet.
Gestation Age
OK, so what we do know is, gestation is the period between conception and birth when a baby grows and develops inside the mother’s womb. Because it’s impossible to know exactly when conception occurs, gestational age is measured from the first day of the mother’s last menstrual cycle to the current date. It is measured in weeks. Ladies, this means that during weeks 1 and 2 of pregnancy, you are not yet pregnant. CRAZY!! that you are not officially pregnant, but this is the difference because this is the time when her body is preparing for a baby. A normal gestation lasts anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks.
When you make an appointment at Pregnancy Treasures for the 6 week heart-beat and we are measuring 4 to 5 weeks don’t worry, don’t freak out. You may not be as far along as your app is telling you or what you thought. If that happens we always encourage you to discuss your concerns with your doctor. OK. so now that we are over the first couple of weeks and you are 6 weeks what will you see at Pregnancy Treasures Boutique Guppy Beat ultrasound.

Relax and see your Baby
We have a great relaxing room and you can bring your self, your significant other or family and friends. At Pregnancy Treasures we use our awesome 3D abdominal probe to better see and detect the heart-beat at 6 weeks into pregnancy. We do not use a transvaginal probe. PHEW, so that way you can bring others to listen to that awesome beat. If you book a heart-beat package at Pregnancy Treasures we can’t get it, it may be for various reasons. We don’t diagnosis meaning we can’t give you a reason why we didn’t get the heartbeat. We don’t offer free repeats for our Guppy Beat so try to be accurate on your weeks. If you are not sure, wait a week or so before you make your 6 week appointment.
In the above photo is about 4 to 5 week into pregnancy. In the photo you will notice a small circle that may not look like much, but it is like a baby cocoon called a gestational sac. The cells that make up this sac will begin to specialize. Some cells will become part of the placenta. Some will form the amniotic sac that will fill with fluid to cushion your developing baby. Other cells are destined to form everything from delicate eyelashes to muscles and skin. But that’s still a long way away.
Baby’s Heart-rate or known as Fetal Heart Rate (FHR)
Your baby’s heartbeat should be between 90-110 beats per minute (bpm) at 6 to 7 weeks according to the current literature . By the ninth week, your baby’s heartbeat typically will reach between 140-170 bpm and some literature state 140 – 180 bpm.
Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) then increases progressively over the subsequent 2-3 weeks and here are averages according to the literature.
- ~110 bpm by 5-6 weeks
- ~170 -180 bpm by 9-10 weeks
- Here is the average FHR from 14 weeks on:
- ~150 bpm by 14 weeks
- ~140 bpm by 20 weeks
- ~130 bpm by term

Treasure the Moments
Why you might not hear baby’s heartbeat
You might not be able to hear a baby’s heartbeat when you visit us for the Guppy Beat/Heart-beat package. Most commonly, this is because it’s too early in the pregnancy. This doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. Remember we talked about this a bit in the beginning of this post and again any and all worries always ask your health care professionals. At Pregnancy Treasures we are non-diagnostic, meaning we don’t Interpret anything. That is up to your doc.
Other reasons you might not hear the heartbeat include:
- A tipped uterus – notice the sac is lower in the photo compared to the aboves photo
- Having a large abdomen
- Being less far along than you thought
We have the adorable Heart-Beat Animals
Want to treasures your baby’s heartbeat! We have cute heartbeat animals that you will love. We record your baby’s heartbeat from mommy’s belly into our awesome machine. Then we record your baby’s heartbeat into the recordable heart and place it in the animal of choice. I can tell you from a Gram’s point of view… PRICELESS. I absolutely love haring my granddaughter’s heart-beat at will. Now that she is born I still listen to her precious beat, the one I fell so deeply in love with. So yes, Grand-parents will love them. Here is a sample of some of the animals we have to offer.
What about the Apps that let you listen to your baby’s heart-beat
Tread Cautiously! Today you have lots of apps and devices to let you hear your baby’s heartbeat at home; but your doctor may warn you against using an at-home device. The quality of these apps and devices varies greatly. They may give you an inaccurate heartbeat reading and cause unnecessary concern or panic. Pregnancy Treasures has a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine “Mindray” and is top quality. We can only say to be cautious with these Apps and personally, I would be a bit on the safe side and not use them. We don’t know the effects of the phone or the apps on the tissue. But with everything, always talk to your doctor and ask if they recommend an at-home device. They can tell you if it’s safe to use during your pregnancy.
Can you determine Gender through the baby’s heart-rate?
No, the heart rate cannot predict the sex of your baby. There are lots of old wives’ tales surrounding pregnancy. You may have heard that your baby’s heart rate can predict their sex as early as the first trimester. If it’s over 140 bpm, you‘re having a baby girl. This is typically not valid form of gender determination. It is fun but it does not tell you the gender. You can always guess and perhaps 50% of the time you will be correct since there are only two genders to choose from. We at Pregnancy Treasures are accurate with gender determination if you are 14 weeks into your pregnancy we can tell you via ultrasound. Call or go online for details
